Omega 3 fatty acids are considered by many medical specialists as being essential fatty acids. They are essential to the human health, but there is a problem: the body cannot manufacture them naturally and they have to be obtained from foods and supplements. Omega 3 fatty acids can be found in great concentrations in cold water fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other marine life such as algae and krill, certain green leafed plants and nut oils.

Many medical institutes have recognized the benefits of these essential fatty acids. For example, the American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least 2 times a week.

There are three types of omega 3 fatty acids that are obtained from foods and used by the body: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The body converts ALA to EPA and DHA, the two types of omega-3 fatty acids more readily used by the body. Many medical researches showed the important benefits of these essential fatty acids. One of their most significant properties is their anti-inflammatory action.

The omega fatty acids, if they are founding the body in the proper quantity, can help reduce may sorts of inflammation and help prevent risk factors associated with a long series of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Specialists also found out that these essential fatty acids are concentrated in the human brain and play an important role in the cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function. The same studies have shown that infants who do not get enough omega 3 fatty acids from their mothers during pregnancy can develop vision and nerve problems.

Diet specialists recommend an increased consumption of omega 3 fatty acids to treat a variety of health conditions: high cholesterol problems, high blood pressure, a long series of heart and circulatory conditions, diabetes, arthritis (due to the anti-inflammatory action of omega 3 fatty acids), osteoporosis. Because the brain contains large quantities of omega 3 fatty acids, increasing the amount of essential fats in the diet helps prevent a series of mental conditions, such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder.

Other medical conditions are ameliorated by increasing the intake of omega 3 fats, such as: burns and skin problems, asthma, inflammatory bowel syndrome, menstrual pain, autism, ulcers, migraine headaches, preterm labor, emphysema or psoriasis.

As you can see, increasing the amount of omega 3 in your diet or by taking omega 3 supplements. Discuss with your doctor as he is the only one able to recommend you the necessary dose of omega 3.
